Success Cases

The Fourth HPR1000 Unit in the World Connected to Grid for Power Generation, with CI Designed by ECEPDI

On March 4, 2022 local time, good news came again from Karachi K2K3 Nuclear Power Project in Pakistan: the fourth HPR1000 unit in the world — Karachi Unit 3 in Pakistan was successfully connected to the power grid for the first time, laying a solid foundation for the subsequent commercial operation of the unit. By now, all four HPR1000 units included in domestic and overseas demonstration projects with ECEPDI undertaking the CI and BOP design have been connected to grid for power generation.

Each HPR1000 unit is expected to generate 10 billion kilowatt-hours of electricity annually, able to meet the annual electricity demand of more than 4 million local households, equivalent to reducing 3.12 million tons of standard coal and 8.16 million tons of carbon dioxide emissions annually. It is of great significance in optimizing the energy structure in Pakistan, realizing the global goals of carbon peaking and carbon neutrality, and jointly coping with the global climate crisis. The construction of the project has also boosted the development of relevant industries in Pakistan, created more than 10,000 jobs for Pakistan, and promoted the livelihood of local people and economic development of Pakistan.

As a national name card of China's nuclear power going global, HPR1000 is a G3 PWR reactor nuclear power innovation achievement developed and designed by China with completely independent intellectual property rights, meeting the highest international safety standards, and is an optimal scheme of G3 nuclear power contributed by China to the world.

Since 1991, ECEPDI has cooperated with CNNC in the design, operation and maintenance of a number of overseas nuclear power projects, and completed the CI and BOP design for Units C1-C4 of Chashma Nuclear Power Plant and K2K3 Unit of Karachi Nuclear Power Plant in Pakistan, making outstanding contributions to the development of nuclear power.
