Port Qasim Coal-fired Power Plant Project is jointly developed by POWERCHINA Resources Limited (51% shares) and Al Mirqab Capital (49% shares), which is one of the Top Priority Energy Projects of the China Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC). The Implementation Agreement and Power Purchase Agreement were signed under the witness of H.E. Mr. Xi Jinping, President of the People’s Republic of China and the then Prime Minister of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan during President Xi’s visit to Pakistan in April 2015. This power plant is located in the Port Qasim Industrial Park, approximately 37km southeast from the city of Karachi, comprising of two units with gross capacity of 1,320MW and an exclusive coal-unloading jetty. The average annual energy output is around 9000GWh after its completion, and is expected to support 4 million households’ daily power consumption. Adopting world’s leading supercritical thermal technology, the secondary seawater circulating and cooling system, seawater desalination system and limestone-gypsum wet desulfurization, the project meets the environmental protection standards of Pakistan and the World Bank. With imported coal, the power is transmitted to Pakistan State Grid through a 500kV A/C line.The construction work commenced in May 2015 with the 1st unit injecting power to the grid on 10th November , 2017, and the whole project reaching COD on 25th April, 2018.
